It's 2021 and by now, you must know or have recently patronised at least, one indie brand and (or) small business. This could be more recently because we're just coming out of a pandemic that shuttered many businesses and forced many people to look for alternative streams of revenue. But even before COVID, all around the world, millennial-run indie businesses have been shaking up industries and sectors traditionally monopolised by big multinational corporations. Usually, with artisanal and craft-based approaches to product and service delivery.

In the heart of Victoria Island (V.I), Lagos sits one of such adventurous experiences; a craft-beer spot founded by Nigeria-based Scotsman, Kevin Conroy called Bature Brewery. Less than three years ago, Conroy and a friend started the company from a microbrewery in his apartment, before they bootstrapped a proper spot serving on-site brewed craft-beers in Wuse, Abuja.

Now in Etim Iyang crescent, Lagos, Bature Brewery is replicating the ingenuity with witty beer names and smoke-oven pizza made in an outdoor lounge centred by a small led-lit stage. Kevin, a handyman himself, says a lot of development will still happen at the new V.I spot and on the brand side of things, but Bature already has the makings of a location that's ready to pop off with the right spark.

This week's alt. mondays 046, themed #TheCraftsmen is curated by Nicole, a Kenya-based contributor from our ARTISH community. Nicole has put together a collection of songs from great songwriters who can create a magical song when they need to, but also have songwriting credits on some of the greatest pop songs of the past decade. Stream alt. mondays 046 featuring music from Victoria Monet, Sza, Frank Ocean, Ne-Yo, Drake (by default), plus more masters of the pen.
