In spite of everything we’ve been faced with in 2020, a remarkable number of great music releases that either directly give voice to the issues that matter or offer escape from them, have surfaced.
Adekunle Gold prefers to be referred to as AG these days, his latest single, “AG Baby” sets the theme for Alt Mondays 018, #GoldStandard. Two songs from JELEEL!’s afrofuturist hip-hop exploration, ‘Generation Z’ are featured on the playlist before we delve into more abrasive raps from Forevatired and Nigerian hip-hop newcomer, DALTÊ. On the pop side, we have the new song from Wizkid and H.E.R, “Smile”, Koffee’s “Lockdown”, DJ Khaled and Drake’s “ Smile” and “POPSTAR”, while we get the sensual experience from Zinoleesky and Niniola’s latest releases, “Ma Pariwo” and “Addicted” respectively. Elsewhere, the fierce force of independent women, Dyo on “Real (2020)” and Amaarae on “LEAVE ME ALONE” shows us the assertiveness required to keep out the negativity in 2020.
As the weather gets warmer, we can really go for gold as with this soundtrack to breezy mood of the summer. There are whispers that a COVID-19 second wave may send us all back into lockdown. In the meantime, these let all these #GoldStandard releases tide you over.
