The lyric “Mi switch lane, switch ice, switch pages // We go through to the nicest changes” off JHus and Koffee’s 2020, slow-burner “Repeat”, is perhaps the simplest philosophical summary of this week’s alt. mondays. Though Koffee uses the double-entendre to reflect on her new social status as a rising celebrity, there’s a paradoxical tilt to hearing her sing of positive impermanence on a song about reliving only the good moments. It’s a subtle reminder to not only seek things that feel good in our souls, but also be grounded by that illuminating purpose. That’s why this 20th edition of our official weekly playlists, is themed #MainlandBlues, as a homage to the Lagos Mainland where all the greatest Nigerian stories are born, and a metaphor to cherish moments of stillness and peace — if you find it in Lagos, where you’re quite literally in the eye of the storm at every waking moment. Featuring new music from Jorja Smith, Reminisce, Gunna, Sam Smith, Maleek Berry, and selected cuts from Beyonce, Odunsi and more. If you ever get lost at sea, you can use these #MainlandBlues as a compass to find your way back to dry land.
